Grandstands added to Moretz Sports Complex, enhancing fan experience

LR Sports Complex

HICKORY, N.C. – A comprehensive project to install permanent grandstands is set to enhance the Lenoir-Rhyne University Soccer Field and the Irwin Belk Track at the Moretz Sports Complex this summer. With donations of $100,000 from alumni, parents, and community supporters, construction began in mid-April and is scheduled for completion by the start of the 2018 soccer season. The grandstands, made by Southern Bleacher Company and installed by David E. Looper & Company, will seat nearly 500 people.

“These improvements to our LR facilities are part of the University’s strategic plan to serve the needs of our student-athletes and coaches, as well as offer a more engaged and better audience experience for our campus and community,” said University President Fred Whitt, Ph.D. “We thank our donors for their commitment and passion to the continued growth and success at LR.”

In the next phase, LR will raise funds for the addition of a press box that will connect to the grandstands and will provide concessions and restrooms for spectators, which will position the venue as one of the top facilities in the region.

“We are extremely proud and excited that construction has started on our new grandstands at Moretz Sports Complex,” said Gary Higgins, head coach, women’s soccer. “LR soccer has a wonderful relationship with our local soccer community and this facility enhancement wouldn’t be possible without their support. Our fans will now have a top-notch place to watch some of the best Division II soccer in the country.”
