By LISA CRAWFORD

HICKORY, N.C. – The Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) of Lenoir-Rhyne University announces a new position, rector and dean of the seminary, to be filled as early as Jan. 2, 2019, and no later than June 3, 2019. Applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for the position are now being accepted.

The rector and dean of the seminary is a full-time appointment reporting directly to the president of LR. The primary duties of this position are to serve as the lead academic and church administrator for LTSS and to further develop LTSS as an exemplary seminary within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and among its ecumenical partners.

LTSS, founded in 1830, eventually found its permanent home in the Eau Claire neighborhood of north Columbia, South Carolina, in 1911. One of seven ELCA seminaries in the United States, LTSS is the only ELCA seminary in the southeast. Rich in tradition and welcoming to seminarians from many denominations, LTSS boasts a dedicated, collegial faculty and a broad alumni base of distinguished regional and national church leaders. LTSS is designated as a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) seminary and, as a seminary of the ELCA, is positioned to faithfully serve the synods of Region 9 strategically and uniquely.

Candidates for the position of rector and dean of the seminary will normally possess a doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited university in religious studies, theology, or a related field and should demonstrate sufficient ability and experience to provide effective spiritual, academic, and administrative leadership. Paramount is the ability to articulate and communicate the vision of LTSS and to interact effectively with the seminary community as well as the Columbia community, supporters, donors, and constituencies of the seminary.

Applications should include a letter demonstrating the candidate’s suitability for the position, a current curriculum vitae, official copies of all transcripts, and a list of the names and contact details of three individuals who have agreed to serve as references. All communications will be held in strict confidence. Screening of complete applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Applications should be submitted electronically, preferably in PDF format, to president@lr.edu or by writing to the Office of the President, Lenoir Rhyne University, P.O. Box 7163, Hickory, NC 28603.
