CHARLOTTE, NC - On Sunday, December 19, 2021, the Rho Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated added 100 women of service to its membership. Under the leadership of chapter president Dr. Meg Gibson, the organization welcomed the 100, installed new officers, and celebrated a record number of total members at 504. Most of all, after 22 months of virtual meetings, members finally gathered at the Hilton Airport Hotel in Charlotte, whereas the organization was proud to announce the over 300 member in-person participants, were all vaccinated.

President Meg Gibson stated, for over thirty years, “Members of Rho Psi Omega Chapter have been dedicated to cultivating, inspiring and empowering others for the advancement of the Charlotte Mecklenburg community.” Recognizing the international mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the newest members engaged in service and outreach to benefit Florence Crittenton; an organization based in Charlotte that services and empowers young women and girls in need of critical counseling, residential, parenting, education, and therapeutic services. New members contributed roughly $3,000 to Florence Crittenton’s Capital Campaign, and promoted the organization’s mission and value throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Member Renee Sanders said, “This is just another example of how pretty works.”

The 100 will join a chapter of professional educators, clergywomen, business experts, judicial barristers, medical professionals, community activists, and entrepreneurs, who have been actively engaging in the international 2018-2022 campaign, “Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service.” Within this framework, the organization has five initiatives designed to advance the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha and underscore the organization’s commitment to community uplift. They are: HBCU for Life: A Call to Action, Women’s Healthcare and Wellness, Building Your Economic Legacy, The Arts, and Global Impact. Moreover, a signature program #CAP℠ - College Admissions is designed to assist students in their efforts to enter college.

The Rho Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated joins the ranks of many other chapters in the organization with record intake numbers. The organization’s international legacy of community service, social justice, political activism and much more, gained global recognition with its member, Vice President Kamala Harris. “Anyone watching the news or paying attention to politics were able to witness the power of a professional women’s network and a true sisterhood,” commented Shana Pryor, who has been a member since 2019. With over 1,000 chapters and over 300,000 members globally and counting, Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue its 113-year legacy of service; and within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, the Rho Psi Omega Chapter will continue to impact.
