Seniors on the Move

In late April, ‘Seniors on the Move’ hosted its fifth affair with 200 guests in attendance, at the Embassy Suites, Concord, North Carolina. The sold out event captivated the audience with an elegant fashion show entitled, “New Orleans What a Wonderful World.”

Upon entering a festive ambience abound. The laizzez faire atmosphere of New Orleans flowed from the hotel lobby to the ballroom and was surrounded by music provided by saxophonist Will Lee.

A New Orleans five course luncheon was served amid décor flourishes of purple, green, yellow and white. Fashions were bold, vogue, stylish and crazed, and were modeled by men and women of the group. What an affair it was!

Seniors on the Move (SOTM) is a group of spiritually, physically and socially active men and women over 50, who organized to provide hope, fulfilling activities and community services to others.

Seniors on the Move (SOTM) Founder and President, Rovena Jasper, recently said, “In 2011, as an empty nester, I was determined not to become inactive. I began visiting senior centers to fill the void. Unfortunately, what I found were men and women playing bingo, checkers, and other games. I realized that I and maybe other seniors might want a little more excitement in retirement. I prayed for direction and God gave me the vision to create for active seniors a variety of events, volunteerism, and travel. As a result, ‘Senior’s on The Move’ originated in 2013.

As a group, the first activity sponsored was a talent show mimicking the Supremes, Aretha Franklin, and other entertainers of an era known as “Old School Music.”

Gail Curtis, Marketing and Public Relations Director for the group shared, “our volunteerism and philanthropy includes assisting the Salvation Army, Care Ring, Naomi Drenan Recreation Center Summer Camp and the Urban League Golf Tour.”
