Following Dr. Long’s untimely death in 2011 his wife and family founded the Dr. Fred J. Long Jr. Foundation, Inc. knowing his belief in higher education was the road to success. The goal was to create a scholarship for graduating seniors with need of assistance. Initially, the scholarships were only presented to high school graduates of Iredell County but soon grew to include other areas. to assist graduates with sincere need.
Funds for the scholarship were first raised when Long’s sister, Synetta Raye’s husband, Ted Raye began sponsoring golf tournaments which continued for more than five years. In 2021 the family then began getting blessings from colleagues and others, and soon grew to the ability to present five.
