LR’s Abbey Hartsell Bound for USGA Women’s Amateur Championship

HICKORY, NC – Abbey Hartsell, a rising-senior on the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Golf Team, competed in the United States Golf Association Qualifying tournament on July 6, 2018 at Monroe Country Club and qualified as a USGA Women’s Amateur.

The Hickory, N.C. native is the first amateur qualifier in program history, and she did so with a 2-under-par 70 on a course that covered a total of 6,333 yards.

“I am very happy to have qualified for the USGA Women’s Amateur Championship,” Hartsell said. “It’s a big step in my golf career to be able to play with the best amateurs in the country.”

Sectional qualifying is conducted over 18 holes at 23 locations in the United States and Canada. The championship proper will be held at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, TN from August 6-12, 2018.

This qualifier was conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association on behalf of the United States Golf Association.

Hartsell is the first Bear ever to qualify as an amateur from the women’s golf team.
