NCCU Baseball Alum Devin Sweet Recognized as a Top-30 Prospect

DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central University baseball alum Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) had a strong 2019 on the mound within the Seattle Mariners’ organization, and he has been tabbed as a Top-30 prospect within the Mariners’ system by Prospects Live.

Sweet made 34 appearances with 15 starts and one complete game in 2019, and earned eight wins with a 2.76 ERA over 127.1 innings. He also tossed an impressive 152 strikeouts with just 27 walks, and made history with the Single-A West Virginia Power as he threw the first nine-inning complete game in franchise history on July 28, 2019, with a career-best 12 strikeouts.

Sweet finished the year with the Advanced-A Modesto Nuts, where he made three starts with a 1-0 record and 0.96 ERA with 21 strikeouts. With Modesto, he was also recognized as the California League Pitcher of the Week on Sept. 2.

Sweet has also received a nod for having the best changeup in the organization by Baseball America.

Sweet was a four-year starter at NCCU and is the program's all-time wins and strikeouts leader with 18 victories and 246 punch outs over 59 appearances and 41 starts. During his senior campaign in 2018, he fanned 87 batters to set a new NCCU single-season strikeout record and tied his career season-high with five wins.
