North Carolinians Call on Senators Tillis & Burr to Support Health Care Provisions in House-Passed Bill that Ensure Access During Coronavirus Pandemic

May 1, 3:25AM

RALEIGH, NC – Following House passage today of the HEROES Act, Piedmont Rising Executive Director Casey Wilkinson, issued the following statement:

“In the middle of this crisis, Senator Tillis must support new health care provisions from the House-passed HEROES Act that would ensure unemployed North Carolinians have access to health care. He’s voted repeatedly to make health insurance harder to afford, but now he can take action and provide peace of mind to out-of-work North Carolinians.”

Background

•The House vote comes as more than 1 million North Carolinians have applied for unemployment benefits since the virus hit the U.S. In addition, 1.4 million people in the U.S. have confirmed cases of the virus and more than 84,000 have died.

•The HEROES Act includes funding for hazard pay for frontline workers, increased funding for testing and contact tracing, a special enrollment period for the federal Affordable Care Act marketplaces and allows laid-off workers to remain on their employer-sponsored health plans through January, at no cost.
